778 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Shakedown Cruise
Location: USS Poseidon; Briefing Room, Deck 6
Timeline: Day 000 - 1301 Hours

[ON]

Lieutenant Canaan Serine, the USS Poseidon's Chief Science Officer, colloquially referred to as 'Science Officer,' approached the Briefing Room on Deck 6. The Computer had specified this was where the ships Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Phoebe Graydon, was presently located. Of the other members of the senior staff, Graydon was the last of the Command Team he'd yet to meet with one-on-one.

Stepping into the Briefing Room, Canaan saw the Lieutenant Commander seated at the head of the table. An array of data PaDD's and Slates strewn about its surface, the Lieutenant Commander carefully considering one of the devices with a neutral expression.

"Excuse me, Commander Graydon, do you have a moment?" He asked, not wanting to intrude if the XO was overly busy. The white-haired Lieutenant was aware of how administratively intensive the role of First Officer was, and didn't want to interrupt if Graydon was dictating a report or log.

"Of course Lieutenant Serine. Please, have a seat." She said, waving to the seat in front of her. She hadn't been massively busy, she was just looking over a set of reports, getting ready for when they left drydock.

Canaan smiled his appreciation, "Thank you, Ma'am." He approached the conference table, pulling out the chair to the right of the Lieutenant Commander before falling into its ample cushion. "I hate to add to the pile, but I'm afraid you have one more report to muddle through." He snarked with a playful smirk, "The Science Department's readiness report." He clarified, holding the data slate out for the Poseidon's Executive Officer.

Phoebe nodded. "Thank you, Lieutenant." She said, taking the report from the officer. "I think I'm just about getting there with all these reports...it's definitely less than I had in my previous command." She answered, smiling. "So how are you settling in on board?" She asked.

Canaan was intrigued by the XO's comment, latching onto it before responding to the Lieutenant Commander's question. "How do you mean? Was the paperwork more of a burden during your last assignment? What was your previous posting?" He asked, leaning slightly forward in the chair. "Sciences tends to be mostly paperwork. Well, paperwork based on experimentation and research, mind you, but there's still a fair amount of it. Which reminds me, have you tasked anybody yet with the responsibility of maintaining the Poseidon's archive?"

Phoebe shook her head. "Not yet, why, are you interested in taking on the role?" She asked, intrigued.

"Yes, ma'am!" He confirmed with a fervent nod of the head, "If you think me qualified." He added, smiling broadly. "I helped to maintain the archives of Arach VI, although the entire expedition had a part to play in it, too. Maintaining the Poseidon's would encompass vastly more responsibility, but I'm eager for the challenge if you believe me ready!"

Phoebe nodded. "I think that would be an awesome idea. I'll assign you access once I get back to my quarters. Is there anything else you'd like to discuss?" She asked.

"Thank you, Commander!" He replied jubilantly, "Um, yes, ma'am, one more matter." Canaan produced another data PADD and handed it to the Executive Officer. "Commander Johnson approved a transfer requisition of liquid hydrogen from engineering to the biology division. I attempted to complete the order with our Quartermaster, yet was summarily denied when they refused to consider the paperwork I provided. Would you take a moment to review this approval from the Commander and ensure I have everything in order?" He asked, gesturing to the device.

Phoebe nodded and looked through the presented PADD. "Everything looks to be in order...I'll speak to our Quartermaster and sort this for you." She answered, putting the PADD on the desk.

Canaan stood from the chair, "Thank you, ma'am, I appreciate everything." He smiled, pleased with the outcome of their brief visit. The Science Officer was most concerned about resolving the liquid nitrogen snafu, which appeared to be well on its way toward resolution. Now, however, he had the opportunity to manage the Poseidon's archive, a most exciting and unexpected surprise.

"I'll leave you to the rest of those reports; thank you for your time." He concluded politely, subtly dipping his head.

Phoebe nodded, returning to her pile of PaDD's, as she watched the Officer walk out. She still had a lot to do, but thought she should probably arrange a meeting with their quartermaster about the issues with the Liquid Hydrogen. She tapped her commbadge, and asked for the Quartermaster to come to her office.

[OFF]

"Life is full of unexpected surprises."
