751 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Shakedown Cruise
Location: USS Poseidon - Engineering Bay
Timeline: TBD

First day jitters, no matter who you are, and no matter how good you think you are at your job, your first day always comes with those damned jitters. As Jaxson finished getting ready, affixing his rank tab to his collar and making sure he was presentable in his gold and black uniform, he could definitely feel the butterflies swishing around in his belly. Taking a deep breath he did his best to calm them and then decided it was a pointless endeavor. They weren't going to go anywhere until after he finished the task at hand. Introducing himself to his direct superior, the Chief Engineer.

It took him less than five minutes to make his way to engineering from his quarters, and with another deep breath, he entered the large bay with what he hoped was his best smile.

Finding, and approaching the woman he'd been expecting to find there took him another few minutes, but finally, he found himself standing before the woman in question. "Lieutenant Mo'Bri, Petty Officer 1st Class Jaxson Morris, reporting for duty, ma'am," he said, still smiling.

J'Loni nearly hit her head on the railing at the voice. Who...what ....Oh......my new engineer. Hello, pleased to meet you.....PO 1class Jaxson Morris. We got to cut that name down to something shorter. How about just Jaxson? Hm... I don't stand on ranks down here. We are family and we holler at each other by our first names. So Jaxson......what is your specialty?," J'Loni asked holding the hyperspanner.

Jax was a bit surprised by how open, and friendly the woman was, but it was slightly infectious, and he found himself smiling at her. "Actually, ma'am, my friends call me Jax. If you want to shorten it even more. And as to my specialty, that would be propulsion. But I like to learn, and would be eager to branch out and help you in any way you need me to," he replied.

"Well Jax then, you will fit in here very well. I am glad to have you in my department and with your specialty in propulsion, you and I will have fun with the warp drive and impulse drive. I have had a pet project I'm trying to achieve warp 9.999 for 12 hours... Maybe we can do it together. What say you Jax?," J'Loni said looking at the young man smiling.

Jox nodded, a thoughtful look on his face, as he pondered what the woman had just said. "I say it sounds highly improbable, possibly even foolhardy, and most definitely outside regulations," he said, with a mock-serious look on his face. Seconds later he broke into a wide grin, "It also sounds like a fantastic idea. Let's do it!"

J'Loni looked at the eager young man, "Yes son we shall get it done someday," she said. "So you are right out of the academy or looking for some more learning experience? By that I mean do you want to learn more in your specialty area or more of the engineering as a whole," J'Loni asked.

"I've been out of TSTA for about three years now," Jax replied, "I am definitely looking to learn more about propulsion, but honestly, I really like every aspect of Engineering, so feel free to put me on any project you think I can handle."

"Right now we are going to get to ready make sure that the warp core wind up goes unhindered". J'Loni said smiling. "After that, you and I are going to work on the ODN conduits.

Reaching into a nearby supply locker Jax grabbed an engineering tool-kit. "Sounds like a plan!" he said cheerfully. "Let's get this party started."

He'd only been on the ship a day, and he'd only met this woman a few minutes prior, but already he could tell this was going to be a place he felt right at home. She seemed eager and outgoing, and she obviously had a passion for engineering. The ship was older, which presented challenges, but it was also very well taken care of, which meant it was reliable. All in all he felt that it was going to be an absolutely wonderful experience.

Claping her hand on Jax's shoulder J'Loni led the youngster towards the core and work chit chating as they went. The Poseidon was in good hands, J'Loni was going to make sure of that with Jax's help.
