Chief Counsellor's Log, Stardate 70602.0.
I had my first meeting with Commander Franklin Johnson today in the recreational lounge of Starbase 99. For all intents and purposes, I'm recording these thoughts as preliminary remarks ahead of what I expect to be semi-regular meetings aboard the U.S.S. Poseidon.
Commander Franklin Johnson is, at first glance, an outwardly confident person with a poise and calm that serves to demonstrate his qualities for leadership. Being only four years older than myself, some would find him to still be quite young for being in the position that he is in. On closer observation, I was able to get a sense of this: while I have no doubt that he possesses the confidence he expresses, there is a clear weight that bears down upon his shoulders, even prior to embarkation. As this is his first command, it's to be expected, but I feel this pressure exposes a much deeper running set of emotions: fear and self-doubt, predominantly.
Judging by his reaction to the crowd's of the recreational lounge, he was not fond of them. Perhaps he is also more of an introverted individual than he lets on. I will have to see how differently he reacts to a quieter setting once we're aboard.
During our conversation he noted how he had found his way to the Poseidon. Commodore Gregory Paladin, once himself the commander of the ship and now occupying a mentor-type role - "a father figure" in the Commander's own words - in Johnson's own life. His dedication to seeing the U.S.S. Poseidon get the "recognition she deserves" suggests to me that he is dedicated to repaying what may be a personal debt he owe's to the Commodore after events that transpired in Alpha Centauri, but also that he is driven to prove himself, perhaps assure his own place in all of this.
All of this will need to be explored in subsequent meetings; a few conversations with the Commodore - who also seems to be deeply invested in this venture - would also be quite valuable.
