Chief Counsellor's Log, Stardate 70634.1.
This morning I met Lieutenant Oscar Vladinchi, one of our newest crew members who is joining Security and Tactical as a Security Officer. According to a report passed to me from Lieutenant Karn Karn, Oscar appeared on board the Poseidon yesterday evening by means unknown. More perplexing, Oscar Vladinchi was reported deceased by the U.S.S. Pennsylvania following a rescue attempt aboard a Hirogen ship gone wrong.
In my investigation of Lieutenant Vladinchi's record, it became quickly apparent that there were a number of incidents which either relate back directly to the Poseidon or the people on-board: Lieutenant Vladinchi served on the vessel as his first posting starting in Twenty-Three-Sixty-Eight, and then during the Dominion War under the command of the late Henry T. Paladin - Commodore Paladin's uncle - before retiring to the Academy for a few years. He then went to serve on-board the U.S.S. Tennessee in Twenty-Three-Eighty-Five, before succeeding our own Commander Franklin Johnson as Executive Officer in Twenty-Three-Eighty-Nine. All of this indicated to me very strongly that his fate was somehow tied with this ship.
When I questioned him on this, the memories seemed to return to him after what might have been a case of temporary memory loss caused by trauma. Expressing concerns over whether he was indeed the real Oscar Vladinchi, he agreed to allow me to conduct a mind-meld in order to determine what may have happened at the point of death. What I discovered was greater than anything I could have anticipated.
I found myself in a grassy meadow reminiscent of Earth, with mountains in the distance and overlooking a great body of water. In that place I sensed all of Oscar's thoughts, feelings and memories like echoes on the wind, but his own conscious was absent. There was, however, the essence of an Intelligent Being present in that place. Before engaging with the Being, I was able to determine that Oscar's final thoughts when he died three weeks ago were those of being on the U.S.S. Poseidon during Operation Return. I believe it was those thoughts that brought him here, at the behest of this Intelligence that now occupies his mind.
I sensed no ill-will or deception from this Intelligence. Though it did not name itself, it told me that it was being held captive by the Hirogen and experimented on when Lieutenant Vladinchi appeared in a seemingly unrelated rescue attempt. At the point of his death by an energy lance, the Intelligence told me it used that energy to join with the Lieutenant and - upon seeing his memories of the Poseidon - restored him here. Now however they are apparently trapped together; the Intelligence afraid and Oscar's own consciousness still lost somewhere within his mind. I was forced to end the mind meld before I could query any further.
With the agreement of Lieutenant Vladinchi, this is something that requires further study, and I believe a joint effort along with Medical and Sciences is what is necessary at the present time to formulate on some form of a solution. In the meantime, Lieutenant Vladinchi will become an active member of the crew, and will receive continued counselling from me until some step forward can be devised. I will be recommending him for a full medical evaluation from Lieutenant Nivora T'vek in due course.
